Rev. Sandy Johnson served as a lay person for many years in the Las Vegas valley serving Trinity UMC, FaithSprings UMF and Green Valley UMC in Henderson prior to moving to Boulder City. She has experience with church planting, and has a passion for evangelism, preaching, music and sharing God’s love. She first felt a call to ministry in 1999 and has been faithful in answering that call and was commissioned as a Provisional Elder with the Desert Southwest Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church in June 2013. She describes herself as a servant leader and is relational in her approach to ministry.
Rev. Sandy has a bachelor’s degree from Oregon State University in Sociology and worked as a behavioral therapist for 10 years working with emotionally disturbed children in both Oregon and Southern Nevada. She and her husband JJ moved to Las Vegas in 1987 and began their family in 1990. They have three children, Calvin (27), Claire (25) and Cameron (13). Sandy left the mental health field and was a sales executive with Mary Kay Cosmetics and Global Experience Specialists (GES) for the next 19 years. Pastor Sandy graduated from Iliff School of Theology in Denver, CO in June 2013 with a Masters of Divinity. She was ordained an Elder at Annual Conference in Phoenix, June 20, 2015.
In addition to her pastoral duties, Rev. Sandy also leads the church’s care ministry team, Nominations Chair and leads our Events Team. The Care Ministry team is a small group of members who help all of our church family to stay connected and provide assistance when necessary. Each person is assigned a care minister who will be there should the need arise for support, prayer or visitation. Care ministers are the first responders to situations that arise and are in communication with our pastor, keeping her apprised of any congregational situation.
As the Nominations chair Rev. Sandy helps connect people with the ministries and opportunities within the local church, matching their God-given talents and gifts with the needs in the community. They work year-round to provide the necessary manpower for the ministries for which we are called.
Finally, Rev. Sandy leads our special events team. This team organizes and produces the various events the church presents each year including the Damboree, Luminaria, and/or the Electric Light Parade. She works with a fantastic team of hard workers to bless our community. Rev. Sandy is also a member of the Boulder City Rotary, serves as the Spiritual Director for Southern Nevada Walk to Emmaus, serves on the PFLAG board, she serves on the Every Fifteen Minutes program and the BCPD Juvenile Conference Committee, a local diversion program for youth.
