“Not my will, but Thine be done. Luke 22:42 NIV
Do you ever rehearse your prayers? I do. I act as if God were like my friends when I imagine I’m in conversation with them—sometimes trying to imagine their responses, and then my responses to their responses—and on and on it goes.
All the while I’m building a platform for making my opinions (requests) more rational, more acceptable, more believable i.e., the “right” opinion.
Why would I do that with God? It amazes me that after all these years I still think I have to convince Him of my wisdom!
What surprises me even more is how difficult it is for me to simply say “Not my will, but Yours be done” without acting as God’s advisor. This kind of behavior not only reveals my stubborn will, but my sinful desire to rob Him of all the glory.
Can you be completely honest as you pray? At least for today.
